This past weekend our Trail Care Crew Coordinator Deanne Lazaruk attended the Sprockids Fun Day in Gibsons, BC. The celebration was organized by students of Capilano University’s Mountain Bike Operations Program in honor of Doug Detwiller, the founder of the Sprockids park and program.
Despite the slightly rainy weather over 250 people attended the event. Kids of all ages were out on bikes playing in the skills area and taking in some of the guided rides that the students hosted.
The day started off with a VIP tour to see the new trail head sign and the newest trail constructed by the students of the MBO program named "Doug’s Detention". The students presented Doug with a cheque for $16,000, the estimated ‘cost’ of constructing the new 230 meter trail. After some kind words delivered by Jay Hoots, Lydia Watson and Doug himself, the trail was officially opened.
The day continued with games, BBQ, a jump jam and plenty of riding. The event was incredible, everyone had fun and it was amazing to hear stories of how Doug influenced the lives of so many young riders. The Sunshine Coast, and specifically the Sprockids Park is a riding destination that is truly world class and absolutely magical
