This past weekend saw Daniel Scott head back to central Ontario to teach a new group of students about the fundamentals of trail design. Over the course two days students were bombarded with as much information as possible whilst being quizzed repeatedly by our resident Trail Solutions staffer. Using a variety of slides, chalkboard drawings and anecdotal information, the class was prepared for a beautiful sunny afternoon of inclinometer work, flagging and assessment in the local green space, Ken Reid Conservation Area. While short yet intensive, the students came away with a better understanding the amount of work that is typically entailed in designing a proper trail (system) before that first shovel hits the dirt and a new eye for what to look for when laying out new trail alignments.
New for 2011, the Sustainable Trails Certificate is put on by Fleming College. Located at the College’s Frost Campus in Lindsay Ontario, it is one of Canada’s leading environmental education institutions and the campus is well equipped to facilitate a program such as this one. IMBA Canada would like to thank the College and long time Trans Canada Trail advocate Al MacPherson for giving us this great opportunity to impart some of our knowledge to new people within the trails community. We hope that it serves them well in their trail endeavours, whatever and wherever that may lead them.
