Harnessing social media to promote your club

Social media is a great way to promote your club and let people know what you’re doing. Tools like facebook and twitter are free, however, they do require a time commitment and some creativity.

Facebook

Take advantage of the features of ‘Pages,’ as opposed to a public / private ‘Group’. Make sure to choose an easy page address. Ours is facebook.com/imbacanada (Choose wisely because this can’t be changed!). Post relevant links, photos, and articles to generate traffic for your website. If you don’t have a website, a facebook page can serve many of the same functions. ‘Like’ industry groups, land managers, and other trail groups in your region. This will generate more traffic for your page, and hopefully translate to more ‘likes’ for your page.

Utilize the tagging feature when posting on your wall. For example, if you are going to post that you’ve just renewed your membership with IMBA Canada, type “Supporting trails across Canada by supporting @IMBA Canada.” Once you type in the @ sign, a box will pop up listing pages you have ‘liked.’ Once the message is posted, it will appear on both your wall, and IMBA Canada’s. This is a great way to generate more traffic for your page!

Twitter

The key to twitter is to connect with others, and interact regularly. To keep your followers up to date, get multiple club members posting on one official account. You can post about events, group rides, local news, trail conditions, whatever!

If you use Facebook regularly, you can use an application to automatically post your Facebook activity on Twitter. Be realistic! If you aren’t going to post to twitter regularly, there’s probably no sense in having an account.

Blog

Harness a blog for both internal and external communications. Promote events, group rides, and trail building days to members, but don’t forget to post information on membership and bigger picture items for members of the community. Use your blog to promote other trail groups and local businesses that support you!

Spread the workload. Like with Facebook and Twitter, try and get multiple club members blogging.
