If you find yourself near Regina, Saskatchewan with a mountain bike on your car you’ll find a fun riding area at the Wascana Valley Recreation Site. The site, just North of Regina, was host the Canada Summer Games in 2005 and is well used and loved by all the riders in the area. Nestled in a river valley, the site is a welcome spot for recreation and escape from the city. With no power lines in sight, some topography and plenty of wildlife the trail users definitely get the sense of being out in the wilderness.

For this weekend project we decided on a reroute of an old fall line section that will not be affected by the upcoming trail development of Canada’s first hand-cycle course. We were blessed with sunny, warm weather which brought out almost 30 volunteers on Saturday and 15 on Sunday. The hearty Saskatchewan folk didn’t let us down and we put in almost 200 volunteer hours over the weekend and constructed 180 meters of new trail and closed 90 meters of old trail.

Once again, we were blown away by the Saskatchewan cycling community. Volunteers drove from Saskatoon and Estherhazy and members of other cycling clubs come to help out the Regina crew. The South Saskatchewan Mountain Bike Club gained some new members and the enthusiasm of the whole group was contagious. It was also encouraging to see an equal amount of women getting involved with building.

A big thank you to our wonderful hosts Donna and Darrell, South Saskatchewan Mountain Bike Club and AdventureHers for organizing a fantastic trail building school. Special thanks to Western Cycle Source for Sports and Dutch Cycle for providing the food & drinks for all the volunteers.
